Chapter 6. Solving problems This section provides basic troubleshooting information to help you solve some common problems that might occur while setting up your blade server. If you cannot locate and correct the problem using the information in this section, see the blade server Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide on the IBM BladeCenter Documentation CD or the IBM BladeCenter T Documentation CD that comes with your blade server, and the "Server Support" flowchart in the front of this book. Note: Unless otherwise stated, references to the BladeCenter unit also apply to the BladeCenter T unit. Diagnostic tools overview The following tools are available to help you diagnose and solve hardware-related problems: v POST beep codes The power-on self-test beep codes indicate the detection of a problem. - One beep indicates successful completion of POST. - More than one beep indicates that POST detected a problem. Error messages also appear during startup if POST detects a hardware-configuration problem. See "POST beep code descriptions" on page 58 and the blade server Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide on the IBM BladeCenter Documentation CD or the IBM BladeCenter T Documentation CD that comes with your BladeCenter unit for more information. v ServerGuide problems This table lists problem symptoms and steps to correct the problems. See the "ServerGuide problems" on page 60 for more information. v Troubleshooting charts These charts list problem symptoms and steps to correct the problems. See the "Troubleshooting charts" on page 61 for more information. v Diagnostic programs and error messages Real Time Diagnostics tests the major components of your BladeCenter Unit, including the management modules, switch modules, CD-ROM drive, diskette drive, and your blade server, while the server operating system is running. Real Time Diagnostics can either be plugged into an existing IBM Director environment or installed without IBM Director present. For documentation and download information for the Real Time Diagnostics, go to http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/xseries/systems_management/xseries_sm.html. Notes: 1. As of the date of this document, the IBM Director CD does not come with the BladeCenter T unit. If you have the BladeCenter T unit, see "IBM Director" on page 10 for more information. 2. See the blade server Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide on the IBM BladeCenter Documentation CD or the IBM BladeCenter T Documentation CD that comes with your blade server for more information. v Light path diagnostics feature © Copyright IBM Corp. 2004 57
