Chapter 1 Introduction This chapter describes the features of the NETGEAR Model RT311 and RT314 Internet Access Gateway Routers and discusses planning considerations for installation. About the Router The Model RT311 or RT314 Internet Access Gateway Router connects your local area network (LAN) to the Internet through an external single-user access device such as a cable modem or DSL modem. When personal computers (PCs) on the LAN need to communicate with locations on the Internet, the PCs send requests to the router. The router translates those requests so that the requests appear to originate from a single PC, rather than from a network of PCs. The router delivers the requests to the external access device for transmission to the Internet. About the Router
The Model RT311 or RT314 Internet Access Gateway Router connects your local area network
