14 MANAGING SYSTEM FILES This section contains information about managing the configuration files and installing and backing up the switch firmware. This section includes the following topics: Configuration File Structure Backing Up System Files Restoring Files Upgrade the Firmware Image Activating Image Files Configuration File Structure The configuration file structure consists of the following: Startup Configuration File - Contains the commands required to reconfigure the device to the same settings as when the device is powered down or rebooted. The Startup file is created by copying the configuration commands from the Running Configuration file or by downloading the configuration file from via TFTP or HTTP. Running Configuration File - Contains all configuration file commands, and all commands entered during the current session. When the device is powered down or rebooted, the commands in the Running Configuration file are lost. During startup, all commands in the Startup file are copied to the Running Configuration File and applied to the device. To update the Startup file, click the Save Configuration button before powering down the device. This copies the Running Configuration file to the Startup Configuration file. Image files - Software upgrades are used when a new version file is downloaded. The file is checked for the right format, and that it is complete. After a successful download, the new version is marked, and is used after the device is reset. Backup and restore of the configuration files are always done from and to the Startup Config file.
