34 C H A P T E R Configuring MPLS, MPLS VPN, MPLS OAM, and EoMPLS This chapter describes how to configure multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) and Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS) on the Cisco ME 3800X and ME 3600X switches. MPLS is a packet-switching technology that integrates link layer (Layer 2) switching with network layer (Layer 3) routing. With MPLS, data is transferred over any combination of Layer 2 technologies, using any Layer 3 protocol, with increased scalability. MPLS supports different routes between a source and destination over a router-based Internet backbone. • MPLS virtual private networks (VPNs) provides the capability to deploy and administer scalable Layer 3 VPN backbone services to business customers. A VPN is a secure IP-based network that shares resources on one or more physical networks. • Cisco IOS Release 12.2(52)EY supports: - MPLS Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) functionality to allow service providers to monitor label switched path (LSP) integrity and to quickly isolate MPLS forwarding problems. - MPLS IP Service Level Agreements (IP SLAs). - MPLS traffic engineering fast reroute link protection. This feature provides link protection to label-switched paths (LSPs), enabling LSP traffic that crosses a failed link to be rerouted around the failure. • EoMPLS is a tunneling mechanism that transports Layer 2 Ethernet frames over an MPLS network. You can connect two Layer 2 networks that are in different locations, without bridges, routers, or switches at the locations. You enable the MPLS backbone to accept Layer 2 traffic by configuring the label-edge routers (LERs) at both ends of the MPLS backbone.
