To Play Records Select speakers and touch the Sensor forPHONO I orPHONO 2. Activate your turntable and advance the Receiver's VOLUME control clockwise to a comfortable level. If at average listening levels you hear objectionable (that is, easily audible) hum. turn the POWER switch off and check the rear panel PHONO connections. Make sure that the turntable's signal plugs are firmly seated in their receptacles. Sometimes unplugging the power line cord of either the turntable, the Receiver or both. and reversing the orientation of the plug(s) will reduce hum. If hum is still present disconnect the ground wire that goes from the turntable to the Receiver. Some turntable-cartridge combinations will produce less hum this way. Subsonic Filter You mayprefer the margin ofsafetyprovidedbyhaving the SUBSONIC FILTER switch set to theINposition. Some criticallisteners may prefer to have the switch in the OUTposition, after making the following test. The SUBSONIC FILTER protects your speakers from inaudible low frequency elements caused by severe record warp. acoustic feedback, or tonearm resonance effects: It also prevents these elements from saturating tapes as they are recorded through the Receiver. The filter affects only the PHONO 1 and 2 inputs. You can determine the proper position for the SUBSONIC FILTER switch if you have dynamic speakers with removable grilles. Remove the grille of one speaker system and locate the woofer (the largest driver). Play a warped record and slowly advance the VOLUME control of the Receiver. Watch the woofer for large, irregular frontto-rear excursions. If you see such excursions, set the SUBSONIC FILTER to IN. If you see no such excursions, even at loud listening levels, you can leave the SUBSONIC FILTER in the OUT position. If you leave the switch in the OUT position, you may use the LOW CUT filter on the Receiver's front panel if you encounter low frequency problems in the program material. (The LOW CUT filter will cancel more of the program material than will the SUBSONIC FILTER. Use of the LOW CUT filter is discussed in the section of this manual on Using the Tone Controls.) Once the SUBSONIC FILTER switch is set, rear panel adjustments are complete. You can now place your Citation Receiver in its final location. To Record and Play Back Tapes The TAPE 1 and TAPE 2 switches admitprograms from any high levelsource (usually a tape deck) connected to the corresponding TAPE 1 MON and TAPE 2 MONreceptacles. These switches are on in the depressedposition. When both switches are depressed, TAPE 2 takes precedence. 2 OUT SUBSONIC FILTER OUT IN AUX • • 94* LEFT CHANNEL RIGHT CHANNEL COMMON Note: If either TAPE switch is depressed, no sound will be heard from any other component connected to the Citation Receiver regardless of the function selected. If your tape deck has a separate monitor head, you can compare the original source with the recording as it is being made. Depress the appropriate TAPE switch and you will hear the recording a fraction of a second after it has been made. Return the TAPE switch to the extended position, and you will hear the original source. Use of the TAPE switches does not affect the signal being recorded from the TAPE OUT receptacles. 12
