Chapter 6 Addendum HP NetServer LXr 8000 Installation Guide Hot-Plug Replacement (Windows NT) Use this section for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 PCI Hot-Plug (PHP) replacement. The procedures listed under this section provide the steps to power off/on the PCI Hot-Plug slots before removing and replacing a PCI Hot-Plugcapable board. If the PCI board is not hot-plug-capable, refer to the section in this chapter, "Installing Non-Hot-Plug Boards," for the procedure to remove and replace the board. The HP NetServer LXr 8000 supports the hot-plug replacement (or online replacement) under Microsoft's Windows NT 4.0 with a special interface utility. NOTE This procedure only applies to HP NetServer LXr 8000s operating with Windows NT 4.0 and the PCI Hot-Plug utility. Microsoft's Windows NT 4.0, by itself, does not support hot-plug operations, but HP Configuration Assistant on the Navigator CD-ROM installs a special hot-plug interface utility on NT servers, along with the system software and drivers for the HP-supported PCI Hot-Plug boards. Through this special hot-plug interface utility, Windows NT 4.0 does support hot replacement of identical boards. It is used to turn power off to the hot-plug slot before removing the PCI board and then, after replacing the PCI board, it is used to turn power back on to the slot. CAUTION To prevent damage to the PCI board or the slot, never remove or insert a PCI board from or into a slot with power on. Always use the hot-plug utility to turn power off to the hot-plug slot before performing any replacements. Opening the PCI Hot-Plug Utility Use this procedure to open the PCI Hot-Plug utility in Windows NT 4.0. 1. In Windows NT 4.0, click the Start button and then select the Programs menu. 2. From Programs menu, select PCI Hot-Plug and then select the PCI Hot-Plug Utility. A display similar to the example shown in Figure 6-8 appears. This example has four PCI boards in hot-plug slots. Slot 9 shows power on (left LED green) but with a fault condition indicated by the right LED (red) and its status field displays Link Fault and suggests corrective action. Slot 8 is turned Off (left LED grayed with Not Ready in status field) and Slots 7 and 10 are turned on (left LEDs green with Normal in status field). 12
