Updating the IEEE 1394 Drivers (Windows 98 SE Only) Users of Windows 98 SE must update the IEEE 1394 drivers provided with Windows before they can use the scanner. This update is required regardless of whether an IEEE 1394 interface is already installed or the user is installing an IEEE 1394 interface for the first time. 1 Insert the Nikon Scan CD Holding down the shift key to prevent the installer from starting automatically, insert the Nikon Scan CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the language selection dialog is displayed, click Quit. 2 Open the Nikon Scan CD in Windows Explorer Double-click the My Computer icon. Click the icon for the Nikon Scan CD with the right mouse button and select Explore from the menu that appears. 3 Run the updater Open the Microsoft folder and double-click 242975USA8 or 242975USA8.EXE. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update. 4 Restart the computer When the dialog shown at right is displayed, remove the Nikon Scan CD from the CD-ROM drive and then click Yes to restart the computer. Installing the IEEE 1394 Interface Board Once the computer has restarted, users of the supplied IEEE 1394 interface board can install the board ( 66) and interface device drivers ( 68-69). The "Insert Disk" Dialog If an "Insert Disk" dialog is displayed the first time the scanner is connected and turned on, the IEEE 1394 driver update has not been completed successfully. Do NOT insert the Windows 98 Second Edition CD. Make sure the CD-ROM drive is empty and click OK, then update the drivers as follows: 1 Click Browse... The dialog shown at right will be displayed. Click Browse.... 2 Locate "ntmap.sys" Select drive "c:" from the Drives menu. In the "Folders" list, double-click first on "windows," then "system32," and finally "drivers." Confirm that "ntmap.sys" is selected in the list of files and click OK. 65

Updating the IEEE 1394 Drivers (Windows 98 SE Only)
Users of Windows 98 SE must update the IEEE 1394 drivers provided with Windows before
they can use the scanner.
This update is required regardless of whether an IEEE 1394 interface
is already installed or the user is installing an IEEE 1394 interface for the first time.

Insert the Nikon Scan CD
Holding down the shift key to prevent the installer from starting automatically, insert the
Nikon Scan CD into the CD-ROM drive.
If the language selection dialog is displayed, click
Quit
.

Open the Nikon Scan CD in Windows Explorer
Double-click the
My Computer
icon.
Click the icon for the Nikon Scan CD with the right
mouse button and select
Explore
from the menu that appears.

Run the updater
Open the Microsoft folder and double-click

Follow
the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

Restart the computer
When the dialog shown at right is dis-
played, remove the Nikon Scan CD from
the CD-ROM drive and then click
Yes
to
restart the computer.
Installing the IEEE 1394 Interface Board
Once the computer has restarted, users of the supplied IEEE 1394 interface board can install
the board (
66) and interface device drivers (
68–69).
The “Insert Disk” Dialog
If an “Insert Disk” dialog is displayed the first
time the scanner is connected and turned on,
the IEEE 1394 driver update has not been
completed successfully.
Do
NOT
insert the
Windows 98 Second Edition CD
.
Make
sure the CD-ROM drive is empty and click
OK
, then update the drivers as follows:

The dialog shown at right will be dis-
played.
Click
Browse…

Locate “ntmap.sys”
Select drive “c:” from the
Drives
menu.
In the “Folders” list, double-click first on
“windows,” then “system32,” and final-
ly “drivers.”
Confirm that “ntmap.sys” is
selected in the list of files and click
OK
.
