Troubleshooting Problem Cause/Solution A No sound when shutter is released. Off is selected for Sound settings>Shutter sound in setup menu. No sound is heard with some shooting modes and settings, even when 136 On is selected. AF-assist illuminator does not light. Off is selected for the AF assist option in the setup menu. AF-assist illuminator may not light depending on the position of the focus area or the current scene mode, even when Auto is selected. 58-64, 135 Pictures appear smeared. Lens is dirty. Clean lens. 146 Colors are unnatural. Randomly spaced bright pixels ("noise") appear in image. Pictures are too dark (underexposed). Hue or white balance is not adjusted properly. Shutter speed is too slow or ISO sensitivity is high as the subject is dark. Noise can be reduced by: • Using flash. • Specifying a lower ISO sensitivity setting. • The flash mode is set to W (off). • Flash window is blocked. • Subject is beyond flash range. • Adjust exposure compensation. • Increase ISO sensitivity. • Subject is backlit. Select Backlight scene mode or set the flash mode setting to X (fill flash). 35, 44, 62 30 48 30 24 30 35, 39 48 30, 63 Pictures are too bright (overexposed). Unexpected results when flash set to V (auto with red-eye reduction). Adjust exposure compensation. When taking pictures with V (auto with redeye reduction) or fill flash with slow sync and red-eye reduction in Night portrait scene mode, In-Camera Red Eye Fix may be applied to areas not affected by red-eye. Use any scene mode other than Night portrait, and change the flash mode to any setting other than V (auto with red-eye reduction) and try taking a picture again. 35, 39 30, 59 Skin tones are not softened. • In some shooting conditions, facial skin tones 68 may not be smoothed. • Use Skin softening in the playback menu for 101 pictures containing four or more faces.
