While data is written from the transfer-buffer to your hard-disk, characters may be lost at the serial port. This is due to the fact that disk-access interrupts have a higher priority than serial port interrupts. If you are running at a high serial speed, e.g. 230.4Kbps or 460.8Kbps, on your PC, be sure to enable the disk cache by including SMARTDRV execution in your AUTOEXEC batch file. ZyXEL Serial/Parallel I/O Adapter Card For high-speed PC to 2864 modem communication, ZyXEL produces the special I/O adapter card SP110AT. This card includes a serial port and a parallel port, each with special features, particularly when working with a ZyXEL 2864 series modem, for example: • The serial port is 16550-compatible for most comm software's usage. It has a speed of up to 460.8Kbps and data loss errors will not occur when working with a ZyXEL 2864 series modem's serial port. This solves high-speed communication problems in Windows and other multi-tasking systems. The serial port has a 32-byte transmission and a 32-byte receival FIFO to increase any comm program's efficiency. • The parallel port can be used as a normal bidirectional parallel port. In addition, it has the following two modes for high-speed interfacing to a ZyXEL 2864 series modem through the modem's parallel port: 1) ZyXEL special parallel port mode: With special drivers, this parallel port mode is more efficient in data transfer between the PC and the modem than using the normal parallel port mode. 2) Emulated serial port mode: Although the connection is established using the parallel port (with the above special parallel port mode efficiency), a PC's serial port is emulated which looks exactly like a serial port from the PC's point of view. This emulated port does not need any special driver to operate and it will work with existing comm software packages. The SP110AT I10 adapter card fits into an AT ISA bus slot. It can be set to any IRQ number available on the AT bus. Please refer to the card's manual for details. Check your distributor/dealer for availability of this card. 21-3
