Symptom Suggested action Memory problems The amount of system memory displayed is less than the amount of physical memory installed. Verify that: v The memory modules are seated properly. v You have installed the correct type of memory. v If you changed the memory, you updated the memory configuration with the Configuration/Setup Utility program. v All banks of memory on the DIMMs are enabled. The server might have automatically disabled a DIMM bank when it detected a problem or a DIMM bank could have been manually disabled. Look in the POST error log for error message 289: v If the DIMM was disabled by a system-management interrupt (SMI), replace the DIMM. v If the DIMM was disabled by the user or by POST: 1. Start the Configuration/Setup Utility program. 2. Enable the DIMM. 3. Save the configuration and restart the server. v If you continue to get this error, replace the DIMM. Microprocessor problems The server emits a continuous tone during POST. If the problem remains, call for service. The startup (boot) microprocessor is not working properly. Verify that the startup microprocessor is seated properly. If it is, replace the startup microprocessor. Monitor problems Testing the monitor. If the problem remains, call for service. Some IBM monitors have their own self-tests. If you suspect a problem with your monitor, see the information that comes with the monitor for adjusting and testing instructions. The screen is blank. If you still cannot find the problem, call for service. Verify that: v The server power cord is plugged into the server and a working electrical outlet. v The monitor cables are connected properly. v The monitor is turned on and the Brightness and Contrast controls are adjusted correctly. If the servers are C2T chained together, verify that: v The C2T chain cables are securely connected to the servers. v The C2T breakout cable is connected properly. v A server that is turned on is selected. Important: In some memory configurations, the 3-3-3 beep code might sound during POST followed by a blank monitor screen. If this occurs and the Boot Fail Count feature in the Start Options of the Configuration/Setup Utility program is enabled (its default setting), you must restart the server three times to force the system BIOS to reset the settings in CMOS memory to the default configuration (memory connector or bank of connectors enabled). Only the cursor appears. If you have verified these items and the screen remains blank, call for service. Call for service. Chapter 5. Solving problems 47
