Troubleshooting (continued) Symptom Collision LED blinking LEDs Collision on Problems with Port 8 on the Model FE508 hub or with Port 16 on the Model FE516 hub Check Collisions are normal on Ethernet networks and occur when two or more computers transmit data on the network simultaneously. Computers that caused the collision retry transmission at different intervals until the transmission succeeds. Excessive collisions can result when multiple hubs are cascaded and when many computers are connected on the network. Incorrect cabling, connectors and wiring techniques are other causes for excessive collisions. Check the Normal/Uplink push button on the front panel. If you are using a straight-through cable connected to an MDI-wired device, make sure the Normal/Uplink push button is in the Normal position. If you are using a straight-through cable connected to an MDI-X-wired device, make sure the Normal/Uplink push button is in the Uplink position. Troubleshooting 4-3

Collisions are normal on Ethernet networks and occur when two or
more computers transmit data on the network simultaneously.
Computers that caused the collision retry transmission at different
intervals until the transmission succeeds. Excessive collisions can
result when multiple hubs are cascaded and when many
computers are connected on the network. Incorrect cabling,
connectors and wiring techniques are other causes for excessive

Check the Normal/Uplink push button on the front panel.
If you are using a straight-through cable connected to an
MDI-wired device, make sure the Normal/Uplink push button is in
the Normal position.
If you are using a straight-through cable connected to an
MDI-X-wired device, make sure the Normal/Uplink push button is
in the Uplink position.
