HP 350546-B21 HP StorageWorks Ultrium Tape Drive Removable Model Getting Start - Page 13

Step 1: Check the SCSI connection

Page 13 highlights

Step 1: Check the SCSI connection Use the following questions to help you check your SCSI connection. Most users can use HP Library & Tape Tools to check the SCSI bus, see page 29. If you answer 'Yes' to all these questions, you are ready to install your tape drive. If you answer 'No', you will probably need to purchase and install additional items. For product details, go to www.hp.com/go/connect. 1 Is there a spare SCSI port on the server? No? Yes? 2 Does the SCSI bus type match the drive type, Ultra 320 for Ultrium 960, Ultra 160 for No? Ultrium 460 or Ultra 2 for Ultrium 230? Yes? 3 Will the drive be the only device on the bus? This is the recommended configuration. (Do not connect to a RAID controller channel. This is for No? disk drives only.) Purchase and install one of the recommended HBAs into an unused 64bit PCI expansion slot. See table below. Performance may be impaired. Consider replacing your card with one of the recommended HBAs. See table below. Performance may be impaired, depending upon the tape drive model and SCSI bus. Ultrium 960 drives should always be on a dedicated bus. See table below. SCSI Bus Type Ultra 320 LVD Ultra 160 LVD Ultra 2 LVD Single-ended, wide High Voltage Differential Transfer Speed Up to 320 MB/s Up to 160 MB/s Up to 80 MB/s Up to 40 MB/s Up to 40 MB/s Recommended for 960 460 230 Yes, one drive only per bus Yes, for up to two Yes 460 drives per bus Acceptable Yes, one drive only Yes, for up to two per bus 230 drives per bus No Acceptable Yes, one drive only per bus No No Acceptable, but it will restrict performance. Do not connect to a narrow SCSI bus. No. The drive will not work and you may damage the drive or controller. table 2: supported SCSI bus types 11
