Glossary of Storage-Related Terms & Acronyms B S.M.A.R.T. : Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology. This industrystandard technology was developed by a number of major hard disk drive manufacturers to try to increase the reliability of drives. Using this technology, the NSS can predict the future failure of hard disk drives. The NSS uses the advanced diagnostics within the S.M.A.R.T. system to monitor the internal operations of a drive. It can then send an early warning for about 70% of all hard drive errors, such as disk performance, faulty sectors, recalibration, CRC errors, drive spin-up time, drive heads, distance between the heads and the disk platters, drive temperature, and characteristics of the media, motor, and servomechanisms. This lets the administrator repair or replace the drive before any data is lost or damaged. Cisco Small Business NSS2000 Series Administration Guide 171
