05 Listening to your system Using the Virtual Surround Back mode (VSB) Selecting this mode allows you to hear a virtual back channel through your surround speakers. For example, you can choose to listen to sources with no surround back channel information (for example, 5.1 encoded material) with emulated 6.1 encoding (VSB ON). Sometimes the material may sound better in the 5.1 format for which it was originally encoded. In this case you can simply switch it off (VSB OFF) or (VSX-515 model only) have the receiver only apply this effect to 6.1 encoded sources like Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES (VSB AUTO).1 The table indicates when you will hear the virtual surround back channel. • Press EXTENDED MODE / VSB MODE (front panel) to select a virtual surround back channel option. Each press cycles through the options as follows: • VSB ON - Virtual Surround Back is always used (for example, on 5.1 encoded material) • VSB AUTO - (VSX-515 model only) Virtual Surround Back is automatically applied to 6.1 encoded sources (for example, Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES) • VSB OFF - Virtual Surround Back mode is switched off Type of source Dolby Digital EX/ DTS-ES encoded multichannel source with 6.1ch surround Dolby Digital/DTS encoded multichannel source Dolby Digital/DTS encoded stereo source; other digital stereo source Analog 2-channel (stereo) source VSB mode ON AUTO ON AUTO ON AUTO ON AUTO Standard Multichannel Stereo sources sources 2 Pro Logic II 2 Pro Logic ì ì ì ì ì ì ì Neo:6 ì ì ì ì Advanced surround ì ì ì ì ì ì ì ì Note 1 You can't use the Virtual Surround Back mode with headphones or with the STEREO / DIRECT mode.
