131 Exploring Your Computer's Features Setting up for communications Setting up for communications Your computer comes with a built-in modem that can be connected to a standard voice-grade telephone line. The modem allows you to: ❖ Access the Internet. ❖ Communicate with your office's local area network (LAN), or a larger corporate wide area network (WAN). For specific information about connecting to a LAN or WAN, consult your network administrator. ❖ Send a fax directly from your computer. For more information regarding your computer's modem, visit the Toshiba Web site at pcsupport.toshiba.com. NOTE To stay current on the most recent software and hardware options for your computer, and for other product information, be sure to regularly check the Toshiba Web site at accessories.toshiba.com. Determining the COM port Your modem is connected to one of the computer's COM (communications) ports. The default setting for the modem is COM3. The following procedure is intended to support you if you need to either upgrade your modem or reset the port to the default settings. If you are having trouble connecting through the modem, you may need to determine the current COM port name and possibly change it.
