Preface
Introduction
This document serves as a starting point for graphics programmers and users of Hewlett-
Packard latest X windowing systems and Application Programmer Interfaces (APIs) on
the Linux Operating System available from Red Hat. It describes both universal features
shared with the HP-UX workstation implementations and
device-dependent
and
os-
dependent
details specific to Linux.
Users familiar with the HP-UX implementations and documentation can apply much of
that information to working with Linux versions of their code base.
General graphical information common for both Linux and HP-UX are featured here.
Examples include:
Pathnames:
Locations of important files.
Compiling and Linking:
The process of turning your source code into executable code
shares many common conventions for both operating systems
X Windows issues:
HP graphics cards supported on HP-UX and Linux use the same
basic X server
Document conventions
Below is a list of the typographical conventions used in this document:
cd /usr/include
Verbatim computer literals are in computer font. Text in this style is letter-for-letter
verbatim and, depending on the context, should be typed in exactly as specified, or is
named exactly as specified.
In
every
case... Emphasized words are in italic type.
. . .device is a
AGP card
. . .
New terms being introduced are in bold-faced type.
. . .the <
device_id>
. . .
Conceptual values are in italic type, enclosed in angle brackets. These items are not
verbatim values, but are descriptors of the
type
of item it is, and the user should replace
the conceptual item with whatever value is appropriate for the context.
