7 Preparing for Online Capacity Expansion Step M. Prepare for Online Capacity Expansion The HP NetRAID Online Capacity Expansion feature allows you to add new storage capacity to drives controlled by an integrated HP NetRAID controller without rebooting the server. Online Capacity Expansion has these restrictions: • You can use Online Capacity Expansion with any logical drive of RAID level 0 or 5. 1. Capacity expansion is impossible for RAID 1 logical drives because RAID 1 mirrors one physical drive by one other physical drive. 2. Capacity expansion cannot be done online for logical drives of RAID levels 10 or 50. • You cannot use Online Capacity Expansion with an array that contains more than one logical drive. The logical drive must be the only logical drive in the array. • Online Capacity Expansion is supported only for the Novell NetWare 4.2 and 5.x and Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000 operating systems. • You cannot use Online Capacity Expansion with SCO OpenServer or SCO UnixWare. This chapter explains how to prepare logical drives for future online expansion. Your NOS documentation and the HP NetRAID Series User Guide in Information Assistant describe how to actually expand capacity. 79

Preparing for Online Capacity
Expansion
Step M. Prepare for Online Capacity Expansion
The HP NetRAID Online Capacity Expansion feature allows you to add new
storage capacity to drives controlled by an integrated HP NetRAID controller
without rebooting the server.
Online Capacity Expansion has these restrictions:
You can use Online Capacity Expansion with any logical drive of RAID
level 0 or 5.
1.
Capacity expansion is impossible for RAID 1 logical drives because RAID 1
mirrors one physical drive by one other physical drive.
2.
Capacity expansion cannot be done online for logical drives of RAID levels 10
or 50.
You cannot use Online Capacity Expansion with an array that contains
more than one logical drive. The logical drive must be the only logical
drive in the array.
Online Capacity Expansion is supported only for the Novell NetWare 4.2
and 5.x and Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000 operating
systems.
You cannot use Online Capacity Expansion with SCO OpenServer or
SCO UnixWare.
This chapter explains how to prepare logical drives for future online expansion.
Your NOS documentation and the
HP NetRAID Series User Guide
in
Information Assistant describe how to actually expand capacity.
