Chapter 4 Configuring Mass Storage Configuring Fast SCSI or Ultra SCSI Mode This NetServer supports Fast SCSI and Ultra SCSI-specification mass storage devices. Both Fast SCSI and Ultra SCSI devices can be used on the same bus; the SCSI controller negotiates the appropriate bus speed for each specific SCSI device. Enabling Ultra SCSI mode disables Fast SCSI mode; disabling Ultra SCSI mode enables Fast SCSI mode. To enable or disable Ultra SCSI mode, configure the appropriate SCSI mode using the EISA Configuration Utility (ECU) CAUTION This NetServer supports Ultra SCSI mode for devices located in shelves within the NetServer chassis only. Due to cablelength limitations of mass storage devices, drives in external enclosures (located outside the NetServer chassis) are supported in Fast SCSI mode only. Operating externallylocated drives in Ultra SCSI mode may result in overall performance degradation and possible data corruption. Do not enable Ultra SCSI mode if you have external mass storage devices connected to the SCSI bus. Configuring Ultra SCSI Mode In The ECU Make changes to the SCSI system using the EISA Configuration Utility (ECU): 1. Insert the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. 2. Reboot the NetServer. 3. Run the ECU. 4. From the ECU main menu, select "Step 3: View or Edit Details". 5. Scroll down to "SCSI - Device Configuration for Embedded SCSI". 6. Highlight the "Support for Ultra SCSI Speed" option and press the Enter key. 7. Select "Enabled" to enable Ultra SCSI (and disable Fast SCSI) or Select "Disabled" to disable Ultra SCSI (and enable Fast SCSI) 8. Press function key F10 to return to the ECU main menu. 9. Select "Step 5: Save and Exit". 24
