v You can install a full-length 32-bit, 5 V PCI adapter in slot 1. v You can install full-length adapters in slots 3 and 4. None of the expansion slots are hot-plug slots. v For slot 1, the computer supports 5.0 V signaling and universal PCI adapters; it does not support 3.3 V signaling adapters. v To assign system resources, the computer scans the adapters in the following sequence: - Slot 2, PCI Express x16 - Slot 4, PCI Express x16 (x8) - Slot 3, PCI Express x8 (x4) - The SAS adapter slot - Slot 1, PCI 32-bit/33 MHz The computer starts the PCI devices in the following order, if you have not changed the default startup sequence: slot 2, slot 4, slot 3, the SAS adapter slot, slot 1, and then IDE or Serial ATA devices. v The computer comes with integrated IEEE 1394 (FireWire) support. v For a list of supported options for the computer, see http://www.ibm.com/servers/ eserver/serverproven/compat/us/. To install an adapter, complete the following steps: 1. Read the safety information that begins on page v and "Installation guidelines" on page 29. 2. Turn off the computer and all attached devices (see "Turning off the computer" on page 19); then, disconnect all external cables and power cords. 3. Remove the side cover (see "Removing the side cover" on page 35). 4. Lift up on the bottom edge of the internal drive-bay bracket and rotate the bracket out of the computer. 5. Determine which PCI slot you will use for the adapter. Review the instructions that come with the adapter for any requirements, restrictions, or cabling instructions. It might be easier to route cables before you install the adapter. 6. Prepare the slot: v If the slot contains a full-length adapter, rotate the rear adapter-retention bracket and then the front adapter-retention bracket to the open (unlocked) position. Grasp the adapter and pull it out of the slot. v If the slot contains a smaller adapter, rotate only the rear adapter-retention bracket to the open (unlocked) position. Grasp the adapter and pull it out of the slot. v If the slot is empty, remove the expansion-slot cover. From the rear of the computer, press on the slot cover. Grasp it and pull it out of the expansion slot. Store it in a safe place for future use. Attention: Expansion-slot covers must be installed in all empty slots. This maintains the electronic emissions standards of the computer and ensures proper ventilation of computer components. 7. Follow the instructions that come with the adapter to set jumpers or switches, if there are any. Attention: Avoid touching the components and gold-edge connectors on the adapter. 8. If you are installing a full-length adapter, remove the blue adapter guide (if any) from the end of the adapter. 40 IBM IntelliStation M Pro Type 9229: User's Guide

on
page
29.
2.
Turn
off
the
computer
and
all
attached
devices
(see
“Turning
