Installing, memory, modules

Page 63 highlights

Installing memory modules The following notes describe the types of DIMMs that the computer supports and other information that you must consider when you install DIMMs: v When you restart the computer after you add or remove a DIMM, the computer displays a message that the memory configuration has changed. v The computer uses industry-standard PC2-5300 double-data-rate 2 (DDR2) DIMMs. v The system board contains four DIMM connectors and supports two-way memory interleaving. v The optional DIMMs that are available for the computer are 512 MB, 1 GB, and 2 GB memory modules. When you order 1 GB and 2 GB DIMM options, they come in pairs. The computer supports a minimum of 512 MB of memory and a maximum of 8 GB of memory. v The computer comes with either two 512 MB or two 1 GB DIMMs installed in the DIMM 1 and DIMM 3 connectors. The second pair of DIMMs must be installed in the DIMM 2 and DIMM 4 connectors. v DIMMs must be installed in matched pairs. The DIMMs in each pair must be the same size, speed, type, and technology as each other but do not have to match the other pairs. You can mix compatible DIMMs from various manufacturers. v Install only 1.8 V, 240-pin, DDR2, PC2-5300, 667 MHz, unbuffered synchronous dynamic random-access memory (SDRAM) with error correcting code (ECC) DIMMs. These DIMMs must be compatible with the latest PC2-5300 SDRAM, unbuffered DIMM specification. For a list of supported optional devices for the computer, see http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/. v The amount of usable memory will be reduced depending on the system configuration. A certain amount of memory must be reserved for system resources. The system summary in the Configuration/Setup Utility program displays the total amount of installed memory and the amount of configured memory. To install a DIMM, complete the following steps: 1. Read the safety information that begins on page v, and the"Installation guidelines" on page 29. 2. Turn off the computer and all attached devices (see "Turning off the computer" on page 19); then, disconnect all power cords and external cables. 3. Remove the side cover (see "Removing the side cover" on page 35). 4. Remove the bezel (see "Removing the bezel" on page 36). 5. For easier access, place the computer on its side. 6. Remove the internal drive-bay bracket (see "Removing the internal drive-bay bracket" on page 37). 7. Locate the DIMM connectors on the system board. Determine the connectors into which you will install the DIMMs. Remember that DIMM 1 and DIMM 3 must be paired together (and must be the first installed pair) and DIMM 2 and DIMM 4 must be paired together. The following table shows the DIMM installation sequence. Memory installation sequence DIMMs 2 DIMMs 4 DIMMs Connectors 1, 3 1, 3, 2, 4 Chapter 4. Installing optional devices 51

To
install
a
DIMM,
complete
the
following
steps:
1.
Read
the
safety
information
that
begins
on
page
v,
and
the“Installation
guidelines”
on
page
29.
2.
Turn
off
the
computer
and
all
attached
devices
(see
“Turning
off
the
computer”
on
page
19);
then,
disconnect
all
power
cords
and
external
cables.
3.
Remove
the
side
cover
(see
“Removing
the
side
cover”
on
page
35).
4.
Remove
the
bezel
(see
“Removing
the
bezel”
on
page
36).
5.
For
easier
access,
place
the
computer
on
its
side.
6.
Remove
the
internal
drive-bay
bracket
(see
“Removing
the
internal
drive-bay
bracket”
on
page
37).
7.
Locate
the
DIMM
connectors
on
the
system
board.
Determine
the
connectors
into
which
you
will
install
the
DIMMs.
Remember
that
DIMM
1
and
DIMM
3
must
be
paired
together
(and
must
be

first
installed
pair)
and
DIMM
2
and
DIMM
4
must
be
paired
together.
