Installing, drive

Page 55 highlights

v Diskette drives, tape drives, CD-RW, DVD/CD-RW, and DVD-ROM drives are examples of removable-media drives. You can install removable-media drives in bays 1, 2, and 3 only. v You can install all SATA hard disk drives or all SAS hard disk drives. Do not mix SATA and SAS drives. v You can install a 3.5-in. slim-high (requires conversion kit), or 5.25-in. half-high removable-media drive, such as a tape backup drive, in bay 2. v The computer supports an optional diskette drive in bay 3 or a Universal Serial Bus (USB) drive that is connected to the USB connector on the front of the computer. v The internal drive-bay bracket provides two additional drive bays for the installation of a fifth drive (bay 5) and sixth drive (bay 6). v Three SAS hard disk drives can be installed in the computer, in bays 2, 4 and 5. Install the SAS hard disk drives in this sequence: bay 4, 5, and 2. v Four SATA hard disk drives can be installed in the computer, in bays 2, 4, 5 and 6. Install the SATA hard disk drives in this sequence: bay 4, 5, 6, and 2. v Install the SATA hard disk drives in the following sequence. Number of SATA hard disk drives One Two Three Four SATA connector 1 1, 2 1, 2, 3 1, 2, 3, 4 v When the SAS adapter is installed, use the 4-drop cable to connect the drives to the SAS adapter. v The electromagnetic interference (EMI) integrity and cooling of the computer are protected by having all bays and PCI slots covered or occupied. When you install a drive or PCI adapter, save the EMC shield and filler panel from the bay or the PCI adapter slot cover in the event that you later remove the drive or adapter. v For a complete list of supported optional devices for the computer, see http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/. Installing a drive in bay 2 or 3 To install a drive in bay 2 or bay 3, complete the following steps. Note: When you install optional devices, you might find it easier to work with the computer lying on its side. 1. Read the safety information that begins on page v, "Installation guidelines" on page 29, and the documentation that comes with the drive. 2. Turn off the computer and all attached devices; then, disconnect all external cables and power cords. 3. Remove the side cover (see "Removing the side cover" on page 35). 4. Remove the bezel (see "Removing the bezel" on page 36). Chapter 4. Installing optional devices 43
