3 Choose a flash mode. Highlight a mode and press J. Press the shutterrelease button halfway to return to shooting mode. A Flash Modes The flash modes listed on the previous page may combine one or more of the following settings, as shown by the flash mode icon: • R (auto flash): Flash fires as required when lighting is poor or subject is back lit. • j (red-eye reduction): Use for portraits. Flash fires at low intensity before main flash, reducing "red-eye" but increasing lag between shutter-release button being pressed all the way down and shutter being released. • j (off): Flash does not fire even when lighting is poor or subject is back-lit. • S (slow sync): Shutter speed slows automatically to capture background lighting at night or under low light. Use to include background lighting in portraits. • T (rear-curtain sync): The flash fires just before the shutter closes, l creating streams of light behind moving light sources as shown below at left.
