CHAPTER 15 Performing HotSync® Operations HotSync® technology enables you to synchronize data between a Palm OS® handheld and Palm™ Desktop software or another personal information manager (PIM) such as Microsoft Outlook, as well as to install add-on applications. Conducting HotSync operations The simplest way to synchronize data is to perform a direct HotSync operation by attaching your handheld to the cable, turning your handheld on, and tapping the Star icon. Performing a HotSync operation: Windows computers When you set up your handheld for the first time, you perform an initial HotSync operation. See "Step 5: Perform a HotSync operation" in Chapter 1 for details. As part of this initial HotSync operation, you need to enter user information on Palm Desktop software. After you enter this information and synchronize with your handheld, HotSync Manager recognizes your handheld and doesn't ask for this information again. NOTE Before you perform an initial HotSync operation, you must install Palm Desktop software. If you have not installed this software, see "Step 3: Install software" in Chapter 1 for instructions. If you are a system administrator preparing several handhelds for a group of users, you may want to create a user profile. See "Creating a user profile" later in this chapter before performing the following steps. 219

CHAPTER 15
Performing HotSync
®
Operations
HotSync
®
technology enables you to synchronize data between a Palm OS
®
handheld and Palm™ Desktop software or another personal information manager
(PIM) such as Microsoft Outlook, as well as to install add-on applications.
Conducting HotSync operations
The simplest way to synchronize data is to perform a direct HotSync operation by
attaching your handheld to the cable, turning your handheld on, and tapping the
Star icon.
Performing a HotSync operation: Windows computers
When you set up your handheld for the first time, you perform an initial HotSync
operation. See
“Step 5: Perform a HotSync operation”
in
Chapter 1
for details. As
part of this initial HotSync operation, you need to enter user information on Palm
Desktop software. After you enter this information and synchronize with your
handheld, HotSync Manager recognizes your handheld and doesn’t ask for this
information again.
NOTE
Before you perform an initial HotSync operation, you must install Palm
Desktop software. If you have not installed this software, see
“Step 3: Install
software”
in
Chapter 1
for instructions.
If you are a system administrator preparing several handhelds for a group of users,
you may want to create a user profile. See
“Creating a user profile”
later in this
chapter before performing the following steps.
