Sergers Decorative Chain Stitch Mastering Your BERNINA® Fabric mediumweight denim, 6" x 6" Stabilizer tear-away, 6" x 6" Needle 80/12 Sharp or JLx2 Thread 1 cone serger thread 3 cones Isacord embroidery thread 1 cone Yenmet metallic thread Presser Foot standard or Cover Stitch Stitch chain stitch Following the instructions in your owner's manual, thread the serger for chain stitch, threading the 3 strands of Isacord embroidery thread together, treating them as one thread. Use a lower looper threader or dental floss threader to thread them through the eye of the looper. Slightly loosen the tension on the chain stitch looper. Place the stabilizer against the wrong side of the denim. Place the denim right side down under the presser foot; the stabilizer will be on top. Chain stitch a curved line across the fabric. Turn the fabric over to see the decorative stitching on the right side. To increase the amount of decorative thread that shows, increase the stitch length to 3mm or 4mm. Changing stitch length as you serge will vary the decorative chain stitch effect. Always use a stitch length of at least 2.5mm. Stitch several more curved lines across the fabric. Remove one spool of Isacord embroidery thread and replace it with Yenmet metallic thread. Rethread the serger using 2 spools of Isacord embroidery thread and 1 spool of Yenmet metallic thread in the lower looper. Loosen the chain stitch looper tension slightly. Sew several additional rows of decorative chain stitch. Trim and mount the sample. Notes MASTERING YOUR BERNINA® SERGERS 6/2006 134 ©2006 BERNINA® of America, Inc.
