■ Condensation • Sudden and extreme temperature changes, such as when the camera is moved from the outdoors on a cold winter day into a warm room, can cause water droplets called "condensation" to form on the interior and the exterior of the camera. Note that condensation can cause malfunction of the camera. To avoid condensation, place the camera into a plastic bag before subjecting it to sudden temperature change. Wait until the air in the bag has had enough time to become acclimated to the new temperature before removing the camera. After that, open the battery cover and leave it open for a few hours. ■ Power Supply • Use only the special rechargeable lithium ion battery (NP-40) to power this camera. Use of any other type of battery is not supported. • The camera does not have a separate battery for the clock. The date and time settings of the camera are cleared about two days after power is cut off from the battery. If this happens, be sure to reconfigure these settings after power is restored (page 181). ■ Lens • Never apply too much force when cleaning the surface of the lens. Doing so can scratch the lens surface and cause malfunction. • You may sometimes notice some distortion in certain types of images, such as a slight bend in lines that should be straight. This is due to the characteristics of lens, and does not indicate malfunction of the camera. INTRODUCTION 33
