CHAPTER 21 PPTP VPN 21.1 Overview Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is a network protocol that enables secure transfer of data from a remote client to a private server, creating a VPN using TCP/IP-based networks. PPTP supports on-demand, multi-protocol and virtual private networking over public networks, such as the Internet. PPTP sets up two sessions and uses Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE, RFC 2890) to transfer information between the computers. It is convenient and easy-to-use, but you have to make sure that firewalls support both PPTP sessions. PPTP works on a client-server model and is suitable for remote access applications. For example, an employee (A) can connect to the PPTP VPN gateway (X) as a PPTP client to gain access to the company network resources from outside the office. When you connect to a remote network (B) through a PPTP VPN, all of your traffic goes through the PPTP VPN gateway (X). Figure 126 PPTP VPN Example 21.2 What You Can Do in this Chapter • Use the Setup screen to configure the PPTP VPN settings in the Device (Section 21.3 on page 297). • Use the Monitor screen to view settings for PPTP clients (Section 21.4 on page 298).
