When choosing a child restraint, be sure the child restraint is designed tobe used in a vehicle. If it is, it will havea label saying that it meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Then follow the instructions the restraint. You may for find these instructions the restraint itself or in a on booklet, or both. These restraints use the belt system in your vehicle, but the child also has to besecured within the restraint to help reduce chance of personal injury. the The instructions thatcome with the child restraint will show you howto do that. Both the owner'smanual and instructions are important, so if either the child restraint one of these is not available, obtaina replacement copy from the manufacturer. The child restraint must be secured properly in the passenger seat. Keep in mind that an unsecured child restraint can move around in a collision or sudden stop and injure people in the vehicle. Be sure to properly secure any child restraint in your vehicle -- even whenno child is in it. Top Strap Some child restraints have a top strap. Don't use a restraint like that in your vehiclebecause the top strap anchor cannot be installed properly. You shouldn't use this type of child restraint without anchoring the top strap. 1-31
