Practical hints Jump starting If the battery is discharged, the engine can be started with jumper cables and the battery of another vehicle. Observe the following: RJump starting should only be performed when the engine and catalytic converter18 are cold. not start the engine if the battery is frozen. Let the battery thaw out first. jump start from batteries with the same voltage rating (12 V). Jump starting with a more powerful battery could damage the vehicle's electrical system, which will not be covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. use jumper cables with sufficient cross-section and insulated terminal clamps. make sure the jumper cables are not on or near pulleys, fans or other parts that move when an engine is started or running. 1 Negative terminal 2 Positive terminal 3 Positive terminal cover X X X X X X X RDo Make sure the two vehicles do not touch. Switch off all electrical consumers. Engage the parking brake. Make sure the automatic transmission is in park position P. Open the hood. Flip up cover 3 of positive terminal 2 in direction of arrow. Remove cover from negative terminal 1. 1 Negative terminal 2 Positive terminal 4 Positive terminal of charged battery 5 Negative terminal of charged battery ROnly ROnly ! Never invert the terminal connections! X RAlways Connect positive terminal 4 of the charged battery with positive terminal 2 with a jumper cable. Clamp the cable to positive terminal 4 of the charged battery first. Start engine of the vehicle with the charged battery and run at idle speed. Connect negative terminal 5 of the charged battery with negative terminal 1 with a jumper cable.
