Automatic Transaxle Operation There are several different positions for your lever. shift If you cannot shift out of PARK (P), ease pressure on the shift lever -- push the shft lever all the way into PARK (P) as you maintain brake application. Then move the shiftlever into the gear you wish. See "Shifting Outof PARK (P)" in this section. PRND321 PARK ( ) This locks your front wheels. It's the best P: position to use when youstart your engine because your vehicle can't move easily. bnsure the shift lever is fully in PARK (P) before starting the engine. Your Pontiac has a Brake-Transaxle Shift Interlock (BTSI). You have to fully apply your regular brakesbefore you can shift from PARK (P) when the ignition key is the RUN position. As you in step on the brake pedal, while inPARK (P), you may hear a click from the solenoidof the BTSI. This ensures that the BTSI is operating properly. A CAUTION: I t is dangerous toget out of your vehicle if the shift leveris not fully in PARK (P) with the parking brake firmly Your vehicle can roll. set.
