Using Audio Features Your computer has a stereo audio controller on the system board that enables you to record and play back high-quality sound on your PC. Other audio features in your computer include a built-in, high-quality speaker and four audio jacks (or ports). The jacks are industry-standard, 3.5 mm mini-jacks. (The jacks are also referred to as 1/8" mini-jacks). A description of these jacks follows. For the location of the jacks, refer to the illustration included in this section and the illustration on page 10. Audio Line Out: Use this jack to send audio signals from the computer to external devices, such as stereo speakers with built-in amplifiers, multimedia keyboards, or the Line In jack of your stereo system. Audio Line In: Use this jack to send audio signals from an external device (such as a CD player or stereo) to your computer so that the signals can be recorded on the hard disk. Microphone: Use this jack to connect a microphone to your PC so that you can record your voice or other sounds on the hard disk. This jack can also be used by speech recognition software. Headphone: Use this jack to connect headphones or small bookshelf speakers to your computer. The speakers must have built-in amplifiers. If headphones are inserted in the jack, the computer's built-in speaker is muted (except for system beeps). Your computer also has a volume control dial that adjusts the sound level for the headphone jack and built-in speaker. 26 Using Your Personal Computer
