The dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) feature makes it possible for a DHCP server on your intranet to assign an IP (internet protocol) address to your computer so that a boot image can be loaded onto your PC from an intranet server. The DHCP server on your intranet must contain a program, such as the Intel LAN Desk Configuration Manager, that supports Boot P (Boot Protocol). You can use RPL and DHCP with the integrated Ethernet controller, or with an optional network adapter, but not with both. If you install an optional network adapter, disable Ethernet Support in the Configuration/Setup Utility program if you want to use the RPL or DHCP features with the optional adapter. See "Ethernet Support" on page 56 for information on disabling the integrated Ethernet controller. To enable or disable RPL or DHCP, complete the following steps: 1. Start the Configuration/Setup Utility program (see "Starting the Configuration/Setup Utility Program" on page 38). 2. Select Devices and I/O Ports from the Configuration/Setup Utility program menu. 3. Select Ethernet Setup. 4. Set Network Boot to RPL or DHCP if you want to use RPL or DHCP. Select Disabled if you do not want to start an operating system from the network. Use Left Arrow (←) or Right Arrow (→) to toggle between selections. 5. In the same menu, check to make sure that Ethernet Support is set to Enabled, which is the default setting. 6. Press Esc until you return to the Configuration/Setup Utility program menu. 7. Select Start Options, and then select Startup Sequence. You must include the Network setting somewhere in your startup sequence. Use Left Arrow (←) or Right Arrow (→) to toggle between selections. 8. Refer to "Exiting from the Configuration/Setup Utility Program" on page 41 for instructions on saving your settings and exiting from the Configuration/Setup Utility program. Note: When you are using the RPL and DHCP features, you might encounter error messages specific to the integrated Ethernet subsystem. If this happens, record the error message and report the problem to your network administrator. Also, information about these error messages is documented in "Error Messages Specific to the Integrated Ethernet Subsystem" on page 101. Chapter 4. Configuring Your Computer. 57

The dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) feature makes it possible for a
DHCP server on your intranet to assign an IP (internet protocol) address to your
computer so that a boot image can be loaded onto your PC from an intranet server.
The DHCP server on your intranet must contain a program, such as the Intel LAN
Desk Configuration Manager, that supports Boot P (Boot Protocol).
You can use RPL and DHCP with the integrated Ethernet controller, or with an
optional network adapter, but not with both.
If you install an optional network
adapter, disable
Ethernet Support
in the Configuration/Setup Utility program if
you want to use the RPL or DHCP features with the optional adapter.
See
“Ethernet Support” on page
56 for information on disabling the integrated Ethernet
controller.
To enable or disable RPL or DHCP, complete the following steps:
1.
Start the Configuration/Setup Utility program (see “Starting the
Configuration/Setup Utility Program” on page
38).
2. Select
Devices and I/O Ports
from the Configuration/Setup Utility program
menu.
3. Select
Ethernet Setup
.
4.
Set Network Boot to
RPL
or
DHCP
if you want to use RPL or DHCP.
Select
Disabled
if you do not want to start an operating system from the network.
Use Left Arrow (
) or Right Arrow (
) to toggle between selections.
5.
In the same menu, check to make sure that
Ethernet Support
is set to
Enabled
,
which is the default setting.
6. Press
Esc
until you return to the Configuration/Setup Utility program menu.
7. Select
Start Options
, and then select
Startup Sequence
.
You must include the
Network
setting somewhere in your startup sequence.
Use Left Arrow (
) or
Right Arrow (
) to toggle between selections.
8.
Refer to “Exiting from the Configuration/Setup Utility Program” on page
41 for
instructions on saving your settings and exiting from the Configuration/Setup
Utility program.
Note:
When you are using the RPL and DHCP features, you might encounter error
messages specific to the integrated Ethernet subsystem.
If this happens,
record the error message and report the problem to your network
administrator.
Also, information about these error messages is documented
in “Error Messages Specific to the Integrated Ethernet Subsystem” on
page 101.
