Chapter Understanding Brocade SNMP 1 The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an industry-standard method of monitoring and managing network devices. This protocol promotes interoperability, because SNMP-capable systems must adhere to a common set of framework and language rules. Understanding the components of SNMP makes it possible to use third-party tools to view, browse, and manipulate Brocade switch variables (MIBs) remotely as well as to set up an enterprise-level management process. Every Brocade switch and director supports SNMP. This chapter discusses the following: • Setting the SNMP Security Level 1 • Understanding SNMP Basics 2 • Loading Brocade MIBs 7 • Brocade 7500 / FR4-18i and Brocade MIBs 9 • Firmware Upgrades and Enabled Traps 9 • Fabric OS Commands for Configuring SNMP 10 Setting the SNMP Security Level Recipients for SNMP traps are restricted according to security levels. Security levels are selected and set for a switch using the configure command. To select and set SNMP security levels, do the following. 1. Disable the switch using the switchDisable command. Some configure command options are available only when the switch is disabled. 2. Log in to the switch as admin. 3. Enter the configure command. Configure options are displayed. 4. When the snmp attributes option is displayed, type y after the prompt. SNMP security levels are displayed. 5. After Select SNMP Security Level:, enter the security level (0, 1, or 2) inside the brackets. Refer to Table 1 for a description of the security level options. The following example sets the SNMP security level to 1 (authentication only). This setting allows all snmpv1 users to perform GET and SET operations on mibs, but creates an exception for snmpv3 users that do not have authentication and privacy privileges (noAuthnoPriv). switch:admin> configure Not all options will be available on an enabled switch. Setting the SNMP Security Level
Recipients for SNMP traps are restricted according to security levels. Security levels are selected
and set for a switch using the
configure
command. To select and set SNMP security levels, do the
following.
1.
Disable the switch using the
switchDisable
command. Some
configure

available only when the switch is disabled.
