To get an idea of how different settings for image quality and size affect the number of pictures that can be stored, view the table below, which shows the approximate number of pictures that can be stored on 16- and 32-megabyte memory cards at different combinations of image quality and size. File size of JPEG images depends on scene recorded, producing wide variations in number of images that can be stored. Image Quality To reduce the amount of memory that each shot IMAGE QUALITY occupies, pictures are compressed as they are saved to the memory card. Compression selectively re- duces the quality of the image; the more the pic- ture is compressed, the more noticeable this loss of quality is likely to be (the actual effect depends on the size of the picture when printed or dis- MENU OFF SELECT SET played and on the type of subject). The image-quality menu allows you to choose the amount of compression performed. Option FINE NORMAL BASIC Compression ratio (approx.) Description 1:4 Fine image quality, suitable for enlargements or high-quality prints. 1:8 Normal image quality, suited to most applications. 1 : 16 Basic image quality, suitable for pictures that will be distributed by e-mail or used in web pages. 51
