Gathering with the straight stitch It you wish to gather sleeves, skirts, cuffs or valan ces, this technique is the easiest and most com monly used. To obtain neat and even gathers, you should sew two or three gathering seams. Select program 00 and lengthen the stitch length to 6 mm. The needle thread tension should be reduced to 3. • Mark the first line on the face side of the fabric and sew this seam. Leave thread tail of about 10-20 cm. • Further seams can be sewn at one sewing foot width from each other. • Gather the fabric by pulling the bobbin threads of the seams. You determine the amount of gather yourself. • Spread out the folds created by the gathering evenly and then tie the thread on the reverse side. This secures the gather. I I I 1. I 88
