Using Xerox FreeFlow® Print Server IPS Manager IPDS Sessions In general, IPDS sessions begin with the first IPDS command that an IPDS device receives and end when either an IPDS command explicitly ends the session or when the carrying-protocol session ends. Some IPDS printers support an optional command, called Manage IPDS Dialog (MID) that can explicitly start or stop an IPDS dialog. This command allows an IPDS printer to be shared by multiple hosts by allowing it to conveniently switch between multiple communication sessions. There can be multiple independent sessions, each with an IPDS dialog. When a printer receives a Manage IPDS Dialog command to end a session, the printer can then safely switch to a different session. When IPS Manager starts, it informs the host that it supports the MID command. When the host operator sends a print job to the printer, the host will initiate a session for the job. If a different job is sent to the printer from a different application, the second application will attempt to initiate a new session. The printer will not accept the second session, and will make an appropriate response, depending on the acknowledgement type required by the host. The host application or operator can then retry creating a new session at some later time. Although only a single session can be processed at a time, the ability to accept sessions from different sources makes use of the printer more flexible than if the printer had to be dedicated to a single host application. Background Forms Xerox FreeFlow® Print Server IPDS supports both creating background forms from IPDS jobs and merging IPDS jobs with background forms created either from IPDS or other PDLs. For more information, refer to Using Background Forms in the Xerox FreeFlow® Print Servers on-line help. Barcode Symbology Xerox FreeFlow® Print Servers support printing of all IPDS Bar Code Object Content Architecture (BCOCA) barcode symbologies. Xerox FreeFlow® Print Servers accept and validate all BCOCA data structured field values prior to printing the barcode. When there is an error in the barcode data, an appropriate exception is reported to the host. All barcodes printed meet the symbology specification standard for the selected barcode. Applications can take advantage of the Xerox FreeFlow® Print Server's ability to generate barcodes based on the data supplied 3-22 IPDS User Guide

IPDS User Guide
Using Xerox FreeFlow® Print Server IPS Manager
IPDS Sessions
In general, IPDS sessions begin with the first IPDS command that
an IPDS device receives and end when either an IPDS command
explicitly ends the session or when the carrying-protocol session
ends. Some IPDS printers support an optional command, called
Manage IPDS Dialog (MID) that can explicitly start or stop an
IPDS dialog. This command allows an IPDS printer to be shared
by multiple hosts by allowing it to conveniently switch between
multiple communication sessions. There can be multiple
independent sessions, each with an IPDS dialog. When a printer
receives a Manage IPDS Dialog command to end a session, the
printer can then safely switch to a different session.
When IPS Manager starts, it informs the host that it supports the
MID command. When the host operator sends a print job to the
printer, the host will initiate a session for the job. If a different job is
sent to the printer from a different application, the second
application will attempt to initiate a new session. The printer will
not accept the second session, and will make an appropriate
response, depending on the acknowledgement type required by
the host. The host application or operator can then retry creating a
new session at some later time. Although only a single session
can be processed at a time, the ability to accept sessions from
different sources makes use of the printer more flexible than if the
printer had to be dedicated to a single host application.
Background Forms
Xerox FreeFlow® Print Server IPDS supports both creating
background forms from IPDS jobs and merging IPDS jobs with
background forms created either from IPDS or other PDLs.

more information, refer to Using Background Forms in the Xerox
FreeFlow® Print Servers on-line help.
Barcode Symbology
Xerox FreeFlow® Print Servers support printing of all IPDS Bar
Code Object Content Architecture (BCOCA) barcode
symbologies. Xerox FreeFlow® Print Servers accept and validate
all BCOCA data structured field values prior to printing the
barcode.
When there is an error in the barcode data, an
appropriate exception is reported to the host.
All barcodes printed
meet the symbology specification standard for the selected
barcode.
Applications can take advantage of the Xerox FreeFlow® Print
Server’s ability to generate barcodes based on the data supplied
