USING ROBOHELP HTML 10 214 Linking, navigation, and search Ranking of search results RoboHelp ranks search results based on their relevance. For example, if a word appears in the title of a topic, its rank is higher than the word in the topic keyword list. A topic with the word appearing in heading 1 ranks higher than the word appearing in heading 2 and is displayed first in the search results. Add search metadata Search metadata comprises synonyms, topic keywords, and Stop Words. To add or edit search metadata, do the following: 1 Select Edit > Search Metadata. 2 Do the following: Synonyms Select this option to define synonyms to allow for variations in search terms. For example, you can define "cursor," "pointer," and "mouse" as synonymous terms. If the search term is "mouse," RoboHelp returns all topics containing the word "cursor," with that term highlighted. For more information, see "Change project settings" on page 30. Topic Keywords Select this option to associate words or phrases to the current topic. Typically, you choose words or phrases that are relevant to the topic but are not found in the topic contents. For example, you can choose to associate the keyword "formatting" to a topic about fonts, styles, and point sizes. If the end user enters "formatting" as a search term, RoboHelp displays that topic even though it doesn't contain the word "formatting." When ranking search results, RoboHelp gives more weight to keywords than to search terms found in the body of a topic. For more information, see "Change project settings" on page 30. Note: Keyword search is not available in Microsoft HTML Help (CHM). Stop Words Select this option to add common (minor) words, such as "a" or "the" in the Stop List file ProjectName.stp. RoboHelp ignores these words to display optimal and relevant search results. For more information, see "Change project settings" on page 30. Optimize content for search RoboHelp supports many ways to optimize the content for search: Make Office and PDF files searchable (WebHelp/Pro, FlashHelp/Pro) Users can search for baggage files (such as PDF, Word, and Excel files) in published output. To appear in search results, these baggage files must be referenced in a topic through a hyperlink. Note: You must have iFilter for Microsoft and PDF installed on to enable baggage file search. Exclude unreferenced topics from search The Exclude Unreferenced Topics From Output option in layout properties ensures that search results are displayed only from topics that are referenced in the following project components: • TOC • Index • Browse sequences • Default topic • CSH map IDs • See Also keywords • Related Topics keywords • Hyperlinks Last updated 7/13/2012

Ranking of search results
RoboHelp ranks search results based on their relevance. For example, if a word appears in
the title of a topic, its rank is higher than the word in the topic keyword list. A topic with the word appearing in heading
1 ranks higher than the word appearing in heading 2 and is displayed first in the search results.
Add search metadata
Search metadata comprises synonyms, topic keywords, and Stop Words.
To add or edit search metadata, do the following:
1
Select Edit > Search Metadata.
2
Do the following:
Synonyms
Select this option to define synonyms to allow for variations in search terms. For example, you can
define "cursor," "pointer," and "mouse" as synonymous terms. If the search term is "mouse," RoboHelp returns all
topics containing the word "cursor," with that term highlighted. For more information, see “
Change project
settings
” on page
30.
Topic Keywords
Select this option to associate words or phrases to the current topic. Typically, you choose words
or phrases that are relevant to the topic but are not found in the topic contents. For example, you can choose to
associate the keyword "formatting" to a topic about fonts, styles, and point sizes. If the end user enters "formatting"
as a search term, RoboHelp displays that topic even though it doesn't contain the word "formatting." When ranking
search results, RoboHelp gives more weight to keywords than to search terms found in the body of a topic. For more
information, see “
Change project settings
” on page
30.
Note:
Keyword search is not available in Microsoft HTML Help (CHM).
Stop Words
Select this option to add common (minor) words, such as “a” or “the” in the Stop List file
ProjectName.stp. RoboHelp ignores these words to display optimal and relevant search results. For more
information, see “
Change project settings
” on page
30.
Optimize content for search
RoboHelp supports many ways to optimize the content for search:
Make Office and PDF files searchable
(WebHelp/Pro, FlashHelp/Pro) Users can search for baggage files (such as PDF,
Word, and Excel files) in published output. To appear in search results, these baggage files must be referenced in a topic
through a hyperlink.
Note:
You must have iFilter for Microsoft and PDF installed on to enable baggage file search.
Exclude unreferenced topics from search
The Exclude Unreferenced Topics From Output option in layout properties
ensures that search results are displayed only from topics that are referenced in the following project components:
TOC
Index
Browse sequences
Default topic
CSH map IDs
See Also keywords
