3 Reboot the primary VPC device (VP). During the reboot, devices that are dual attached to the VPC MLAG pair detect the link loss and start forwarding the traffic towards the secondary VPC switch (VS). 4 While the VPC primary switch (VP) reboots, the secondary switch (VS) becomes the primary and forwards the traffic. 5 After the primary switch (VP) reboot is complete, it assumes the role of the secondary switch. Devices dual attached to the VPC device pair detect link up and may start forwarding traffic to switch VP. 6 Reboot the current VPC primary switch (VS). During reboot, devices that are dual attached to the VPC device pair detect the link loss and start forwarding the traffic towards the secondary VPC switch (VP). 7 After switch VS reboot is complete, it assumes the role of the secondary switch. Switches dual attached to the VPC device pair detect link up and may start forwarding traffic to device VS. At this point, the switch firmware is upgraded and the MLAG is fully functional. Static Routing on MLAG Interfaces MLAG interfaces can be enabled as Layer-3 VLANs; that is, they can be assigned IP addresses. There is no support for routing protocols such as OSPF, RIP, etc. on MLAG interfaces. VRRP can be configured on these routing interfaces to provide Virtual IP/Virtual MAC redundancy. Routing is supported only on the edge of the MLAG towards the partner network, in support of implementing a subnet per VLAN towards which the partner network can route. The interior MLAG VLANs, and especially the MLAG peer links, must be configured for switching and must span the MLAG topology. MLAGs and Routing MLAG is supported as a replacement for spanning tree in Layer-2 switched network topologies. When connecting to routed networks, the links/VLANs on the router must be part of the MLAG domain, and the links/VLANs leading to the rest of the Layer-2 network or to Layer-3 hosts must be part of the MLAG domain for the MLAG feature to automatically utilize the peerlink to forward packets around failures. Link Aggregation

Reboot the primary VPC device (VP). During the reboot, devices that are

dual attached to the VPC MLAG pair detect the link loss and start

forwarding the traffic towards the secondary VPC switch (VS).

While the VPC primary switch (VP) reboots, the secondary switch (VS)

becomes the primary and forwards the traffic.

After the primary switch (VP) reboot is complete, it assumes the role of

the secondary switch. Devices dual attached to the VPC device pair detect

link up and may start forwarding traffic to switch VP.

At this point, the switch firmware is upgraded and the MLAG is fully

functional.

Static Routing on MLAG Interfaces

MLAG interfaces can be enabled as Layer-3 VLANs; that is, they can be

assigned IP addresses. There is no support for routing protocols such as OSPF,

RIP, etc. on MLAG interfaces. VRRP can be configured on these routing

interfaces to provide Virtual IP/Virtual MAC redundancy. Routing is

supported only on the edge of the MLAG towards the partner network, in

support of implementing a subnet per VLAN towards which the partner

network can route. The interior MLAG VLANs, and especially the MLAG

peer links, must be configured for switching and must span the MLAG

topology.

MLAGs and Routing

MLAG is supported as a replacement for spanning tree in Layer-2 switched

network topologies. When connecting to routed networks, the links/VLANs

on the router must be part of the MLAG domain, and the links/VLANs

leading to the rest of the Layer-2 network or to Layer-3 hosts must be part of

the MLAG domain for the MLAG feature to automatically utilize the peer-

link to forward packets around failures. MLAG VLANs may have IP addresses
