Configuration Files Configuration files contain the CLI commands that change the switch from its default configuration. The switch can maintain three separate configuration files: startup-config, running-config, and backup-config. The switch loads the startup-config file when the switch boots. Any configuration changes that take place after the boot process completes are written to the running-config file. The backup-config file does not exist until you explicitly create one by copying an existing configuration file to the backup-config file or downloading a backup-config file to the switch. Configuration scripts, which are text files that contains CLI commands, can also be created. NOTE: You must use the CLI to manage configuration scripts. The configuration scripting feature is not available from the web interface. When you apply (run) a configuration script on the switch, the commands in the script are executed in the order in which they are written as if you were typing them into the CLI. The commands that are executed in the configuration script are added to the running-config file. You might upload a configuration file from the switch to a remote server for the following reasons: • To create a backup copy • To use the configuration file on another switch • To manually edit the file You might download a configuration file from a remote server to the switch for the following reasons: • To restore a previous configuration • To load the configuration copied from another switch • To load the same configuration file on multiple switches Use a text editor to open a configuration file and view or change its contents. SSH/SSL Keys and Certificates If you use OpenManage Switch Administrator to manage the switch over an HTTPS connection, you must import the appropriate certificate files to the switch (crypto key import).
