Dell Networking N1500 Series switches only stack with other Dell Networking N1500 Series switches. Dell Networking N2200-ON switches stack with other N2200-ON switches. Dell Networking N3200-ON switches stack with other stacking-capable N3200-ON switches up to 12 units. How is the Management Unit in the Stack Selected? A management unit in the stack is elected or re-elected based on the following considerations, in order: 1 The switch is currently the management unit in the stack. 2 The switch has the higher MAC address. 3 A unit is selected as standby by the administrator, and a fail over action is manually initiated or occurs due to the failure of the management unit in the stack. In most cases, a switch that is added to an existing stack will become a stack member, and not the management unit in the stack. When a switch is added to the stack, one of the following scenarios takes place regarding the management status of the new switch: • If the switch has the management unit in the stack function enabled but another management unit in the stack is already active, then the switch changes its configured management unit in the stack value to disabled. • If the management unit in the stack function is unassigned and there is another management unit in the stack in the system then the switch changes its configured management unit in the stack value to disabled. • If the management unit in the stack function is enabled or unassigned and there is no other management unit in the stack in the system, then the switch becomes stack primary. • If the management unit in the stack function is disabled, the unit remains a non-management unit in the stack. If the entire stack is powered OFF and ON again, the unit that was the management unit in the stack before the reboot will remain the management unit in the stack after the stack resumes operation. ON/N1108P-ON switches do not stack. Dell Networking N1500 Series

switches only stack with other Dell Networking N1500 Series switches.

Dell Networking N2200-ON switches stack with other N2200-ON switches.

Dell Networking N3200-ON switches stack with other stacking-capable

N3200-ON switches up to 12 units.

How is the Management Unit in the Stack Selected?

A management unit in the stack is elected or re-elected based on the

following considerations, in order:

The switch is currently

the management unit in the stack

The switch has the higher MAC address.

A unit is selected as standby by the administrator, and a fail over action is

manually initiated or occurs due to

the failure of the management unit in

the stack

In most cases, a switch that is added to an existing stack will become a stack

member, and not the management unit in the stack. When a switch is added

to the stack, one of the following scenarios takes place regarding the

management status of the new switch:

•

If the switch has

the management unit in the stack

function enabled but

another

management unit in the stack

is already active, then the switch

changes its configured

management unit in the stack

value to disabled.

•

If the

management unit in the stack

function is unassigned and there is

another

management unit in the stack

in the system then the switch

changes its configured

management unit in the stack

value to disabled.

•

If the

management unit in the stack

function is enabled or unassigned

and there is no other

management unit in the stack

in the system, then

the switch becomes stack primary.

•

If the

management unit in the stack

function is disabled, the unit remains

a non-

management unit in the stack

If the entire stack is powered OFF and ON again, the unit that was the

management unit in the stack before the reboot will remain the management

unit in the stack after the stack resumes operation.
