Solving Hard Drive Problems Hard drive error occurs. Cause Hard disk has bad sectors or has failed. Solution 1. In Microsoft Windows XP, right-click Start, click Explore, and select a drive. Select File > Properties > Tools. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. In Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7, right-click Start, click Explore, and right-click on a drive. The device is attached to a SATA port that has been hidden in Computer Setup. Run the Computer Setup utility and ensure Device Available is selected for the device's SATA port in Security > Device Security. Drive responds slowly immediately after power-up.
