Converged Enhanced Ethernet on the HP ProCurve 6120XG Switch Introduction Introduction Data centers typically use two separate communication protocols for transporting data, Ethernet and Fibre Channel. Ethernet is optimized for carrying local area network (LAN) communication to and from servers and hosts. Fibre Channel is optimized for handling storage traffic between storage arrays and servers. Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE) refers to a set of four IEEE draft standards that enhance Ethernet and data link layer protocols to support lossless Ethernet for storage protocols. The new features are defined by the following IEEE draft standards: ■ 802.1Qbb - Priority-based Flow Control (PFC) ■ 802.1Qaz - Enhanced Transmission Scheduling (ETS) ■ 802.1Qaz - Data Center Bridging Exchange (DCBX) Protocol ■ 802.1Qau - Congestion Notification (QCN) CEE supports standard lossy LAN communications and lossless FCoE communications simultaneously. It can be used by data center administrators that currently deploy racked or blade server configurations and wish to combine Fibre Channel (storage) traffic over the same network cable as traditional network traffic. An HP-provided license is required to enable CEE features on the switch. 6-3
