Does Installing More Memory Always Improve Performance? Once you have sufficient memory, any extra memory you install will have no effect on performance. Applications and the Processor Any application you run on your PC presents itself to you as a single unified object. But to the processor an application consists of many single instructions, each of which controls some small part of the overall function of the application. Each instruction is applied to source data from memory to produce new (result) data. When executing an instruction, the processor loads the source data and its associated memory address (location) into a temporary storage area called a register. The new data produced and its corresponding address are also stored in registers. 32-bit Applications For 32-bit applications all of these quantities are 32-bits in length; the instructions are 32-bits long and act on 32-bit data items which have corresponding 32-bit memory addresses.
