Figure 5-6 hardware components IEEE-1394 (Firewire) card IEEE-1394 cable The IEEE-1394 cable consists of six copper wires. Two of the cable's wires are used to carry power. The remaining four wires are signal wires. These wires are grouped into two sets of two twisted wires. These sets of twisted wires are shielded as is the overall cable. See Figure 5-6. Cross Section of the IEEE-1394 Cable Pair of Signal Wires Power Wires Pair of Signal Wires The power wires carry 8 to 40 VDC at up to 1.5 amps and the signal wires carry the digital data. Cables connected between devices on a bus segment must not exceed 4.5 meters in length. However, you can create longer distances between devices with repeater hardware. Note that there can be a total of 64 IEEE-1394 devices on a bus segment. Chapter 5 121
