42 C H A P T E R F I V E See "Fax/Tel (F/T) Mode Only" in this chapter 3. Fax/Tel (F/T) ( ) with an External Telephone Fax Use this function if you expect to receive TAD many fax messages and seldom phone calls. The machine automatically answers F/T every call. If the call is a fax, it prints the fax. If the call is not a fax, it signals you with an F/T pseudo-ring, different from the phone company ringing, to alert you to pick up the call. If you select this setting, you'll need to set the Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time features (on the following pages). 4. TAD Fax This is the only setting in which you can TAD use an external answering machine. Your telephone answering device is connected to F/T your machine, and answers every call. Once the external telephone answering device (TAD) answers, the machine listens for fax tones. If it detects fax tones, fax messages are printed. The TAD setting works only with an external telephone answering device (TAD). Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time do not work in this setting. Manual Reception (Manual Mode) When you set the Answer Mode to manual (the Fax and F/T lights are both off), you must answer each incoming call yourself. Select this mode by pressing Mode key. Here is what you should do when using Manual Mode: If You Get a... 1. Regular phone call 2. Phone call and request to send a fax 3. Fax tone... Then You Should... Talk as you normally would. Press Start when finished talking, and replace the external telephone's handset. NOTE: Sender must also press Start. Wait until the fax machine takes over the call or press Start. Automatic Fax Only Reception (Fax Mode) You can automatically receive all your faxes in Automatic Fax Reception mode (Fax light is on). Select this mode by pressing Mode.
