Page 36 highlights

Managing application I/O timeouts for an online upgrade Applications are typically insulated from the online controller firmware upgrade by the operating system and HBA driver software. Consequently, if the application is running on a properly configured operating system, the online controller upgrades will be performed successfully. It may be necessary to determine if any applications have timeout requirements that are more stringent than those of the operating system. Any applications with more stringent timeouts should be evaluated to determine if the application timeouts will be exceeded by the resynchronization interval that occurs during the online upgrade. IMPORTANT: It is crucial that you check application timeouts to verify that they are equal to or longer than the timeout thresholds for the upgrade. Although an application may survive the online controller software upgrade successfully, there may be an impact on performance. To minimize the performance impact on users, the online upgrade should be performed during a period of low user activity. Managing external devices If the EVA is being used as external storage (virtualized behind an HP StorageWorks XP array), perform the following resets before doing the upgrade (you will reset them after the upgrade is complete): IMPORTANT: Vraid0 LUNs on the EVA are not supported during an upgrade. • Enable System Option Mode 725 on the XP • Set the I/O Timeout to 240 seconds on all applicable external paths • Set the Path Blockade Watch Timer to 180 seconds on all applicable external paths Once the upgrade is complete, reset these parameters to their original values. Managing an SVSP configuration for an online upgrade If the EVA is in an SVSP configuration with SVSP synchronous mirrors, see the HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Best Practices Guide for more information before upgrading. Managing application I/O timeouts for an online upgrade
Applications are typically insulated from the online controller firmware upgrade by the operating
system and HBA driver software. Consequently, if the application is running on a properly configured
operating system, the online controller upgrades will be performed successfully.
It may be necessary to determine if any applications have timeout requirements that are more stringent
than those of the operating system. Any applications with more stringent timeouts should be evaluated
to determine if the application timeouts will be exceeded by the resynchronization interval that occurs
during the online upgrade.
IMPORTANT:
It is crucial that you check application timeouts to verify that they are equal to or longer than the
timeout thresholds for the upgrade.
Although an application may survive the online controller software upgrade successfully, there may
be an impact on performance. To minimize the performance impact on users, the online upgrade
should be performed during a period of low user activity.
Managing external devices
If the EVA is being used as external storage (virtualized behind an HP StorageWorks XP array),
perform the following resets before doing the upgrade (you will reset them after the upgrade is
complete):
IMPORTANT:
Vraid0 LUNs on the EVA are not supported during an upgrade.
Enable System Option Mode 725 on the XP
Set the I/O Timeout to 240 seconds on all applicable external paths
Set the Path Blockade Watch Timer to 180 seconds on all applicable external paths
Once the upgrade is complete, reset these parameters to their original values.
