Redundant ROM support The server enables you to upgrade or configure the ROM safely with redundant ROM support. The server has an 8-MB ROM that acts as two, separate 4-MB ROMs. In the standard implementation, one side of the ROM contains the current ROM program version, while the other side of the ROM contains a backup version. NOTE: The server ships with the same version programmed on each side of the ROM. When you flash the system ROM, ROMPaq writes over the backup ROM and saves the current ROM as a backup, enabling you to switch easily to the alternate ROM version if the new ROM becomes corrupted for any reason. This feature protects the existing ROM version, even if you experience a power failure while flashing the ROM. You can choose which ROM to use in RBSU ("HP ROM-Based Setup Utility" on page 69). Disaster recovery support The Disaster Recovery feature is supported on servers that do not support Redundant ROM. When a ROM flash fails or the system ROM becomes corrupted, disaster recovery enables administrators to update the system ROM with a Systems ROMPaq Diskette or USB key. To use this feature on supported servers, boot to the appropriate media (ROM flash diskette or USB key) for the affected platform, and then allow the flash recovery process to complete. Because no video support exists during this process, the server emits a series of beeps at completion. Automatic backup A backup copy of the ROM image existing on the target server is made in the ROM image backup subdirectory: \CPQSYSTEM\FWBACKUP\SYSTEM For additional information, see the HP Online ROM Flash User Guide on the HP website (http://www.hp.com/support/smartstart/documentation). Option ROMs Smart Components for option ROMs provide efficient administration of option ROM upgrades. Types of option ROMs include: • Smart Array storage controller ROMs • Lights-Out Management ROM flash components • SAS hard drive ROMs • NIC firmware • HP Onboard Administrator for HP c-Class BladeSystem NOTE: The Onboard Administrator and NIC firmware are only supported in online deployments.
