If you will be using snapshots for backups, you can schedule the snapshot to last slightly longer than the expected duration of the backup. Having an active snapshot can affect the write performance to the ReadyNAS 2100, so deactivating it when it is not needed might be advantageous in writeintensive environments. When a snapshot is taken, snapshots of shares appear in your browse list alongside the original shares, except the snapshot share names have -snap appended to the original share names. For example, a snapshot taken of a share backup is available as backup-snap. Figure 4-10 You can traverse a snapshot share just as you would a normal share except that the snapshot share is read-only. If you wish, you can select a detailed listing to show the snapshot time in the Description field. Snapshots can expire when the reserved snapshot space is filled. The snapshot mechanism keeps track of data that has been changed from the original volume starting at the point when the snapshot is taken. All these changes are kept in the reserved snapshot space on the volume. The Securing Your Data v1.0, May 2009 4-11
