Glossary Application Layer See International Standards Organization Reference Model for Open Systems Interconnection. Asynchronous A transmission scheme that uses start/stop bits to define a character and separate it from other characters. Each character is sent to the central processor as it is typed. Authentication The process through which the system validates user logon information. This process involves comparing the user name and password to a list of authorized users. If the software detects a match, the user is granted access to the system based on specified permissions for that user. Bandwidth The capacity or available frequencies of a communications channel. The greater the bandwidth, the greater the volume of information that can be transmitted. Basic Rate Interface (BRI) An ISDN standard that defines the interface between a digitized phone and another device. Commonly referred to as 2B+D.

Authentication
The process through which the system validates user logon information. This
process involves comparing the user name and password to a list of authorized

greater the bandwidth, the greater the volume of information that can be
transmitted.
Basic Rate Interface (BRI)
