6 Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server Administration Guide IEEE See Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) One of the primary professional organizations involved in the development of international standards for local area networks (LANs). The IEEE 802 committee standards deal with physical and data link layers of the ISO/OSI Reference Model. 802.2 Standard for Logical Link Control (LLC) sublayer. LLC is the top half of the data link layer. 802.3 A bus topology LAN based on a CSMA/CD access method (for example, Ethernet). 802.4 A bus topology LAN based on a token-passing access method (for example, MAP). 802.5 A ring topology LAN based on a token-passing access method (for example, Token-Ring). 802.6 Metropolitan area network (MAN) designed to interconnect LANs over a 50-mile radius. Uses fiber optics and a modified token passing technique at 50 megabits per second (Mbps). Integration The merging of separate environments or the ability to tie diverse resources into one functional system while maintaining the benefit of a distributed environment. Interface The boundary between two systems or devices, or the logical areas of shared information where two systems can be interconnected. It also provides a logical connection between different transmission systems or equipment. International Standards Organization (ISO) A Geneva-based standards organization responsible for creation of the ISO Reference Model for OSI.
