Glossary 5 FT See File Transfer. Gateway A device that allows hosts in a local subnet to communicate with other subnets. One function of a router is to act as a gateway. Graphic User Interface (GUI) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates icons, pull-down menus, and a mouse. The GUI has become the standard method that users use to interact with a computer. The three major GUIs are Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, and Motif. In a client/server environment, the GUI resides in the user's client machine. GUI See Graphic User Interface. Handshaking Preliminary signal transfer between communicating elements to verify that communication has been established.
