Glossary 5 FT See File Transfer. Gateway A device that allows hosts in a local subnet to communicate with other subnets. One function of a router is to act as a gateway. Graphic User Interface (GUI) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates icons, pull-down menus, and a mouse. The GUI has become the standard method that users use to interact with a computer. The three major GUIs are Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, and Motif. In a client/server environment, the GUI resides in the user's client machine. GUI See Graphic User Interface. Handshaking Preliminary signal transfer between communicating elements to verify that communication has been established. Hertz (Hz) A measure of frequency in which one hertz equals one cycle per second. HTTP See HyperText Transfer Protocol. HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) An application-level protocol that enables communications between clients and servers on the World Wide Web. The protocol provides a way for a client to access a server and requests documents created using HTML. Hz See Hertz.
